I think the only time I've ever seen them go front to back was on a red-eye YVR-YYZ, and they had what I wanted for breakfast, so I didn't care.
I was on a E190 recently (either SFO-YVR or the other direction), and I was asked 8th (of 9). That surprised me a little, because it would imply that almost everyone flying had status, or were travelling with a companion who had status. I was also the only person not wearing a suit (even the children were dressed up!), so I have no idea how he did it. But again, I got what I wanted
