There are various radial zones for which a pass can be bought but these are only relevant for suburban train services. The entire metro system is within zone 1 as is the airport. The only reason you'd leave zone 1 is if you're planning a daytrip to somewhere like Sitges or Girona in which case you're almost always cheaper buying a standard train ticket.
