Same with a Virgin flight - aircraft. Cannot use Delta miles to upgrade. The general rule is you can only upgrade a flight marketed (flight number) and operated (metal) by the airline of your freq flyer programe (no codeshares). However as is the way with FFP's there are some (expensive) exceptions.

Airlines from USA to Australia are Qantas, United, Virgin Australia, Delta & Hawiian. Air NZ via AKL is good especially if SYD is not your first destination. And many others via Asia. SYD is not the only international airport in Australia, so do not fixate on Sydney (many do). Same for SFO vs LAX.

Economy is ergg economy. Air NZ on the 747 is OK (avoid the 777)
