I want to fly LAX-NYC-LHR-OSL, then back via LHR-LAX, using Avios. Is it possible to book this to use the least amount of miles possible and save on some of the fees?

Basically you would want to redeem on EI or AB transatlantic. See these threads:

LAX-NYC would be a redemption on AA which in coach using avios is a good value with a small cash component. NYC-LHR would have to route thru somewhere else to use AB or EI for low surcharges. You would need to redeem separately for your flight to London. Same on the return.
