A related issue, perhaps, is what happens when all the regular coach seats are assigned but not all the preferred and EC ones, as is often the case on TATL flights. When it's time to assign seats to the Y pax without assignments, do they get the preferred and EC ones for free?
I've seen GAs ask FO+ seated in regular economy if they wanted to move up to EC. If they chose not to move, others were placed in EC.
