I guess we'll just agree to disagree on the idea opportunity cost.

I do, however, appreciate your feedback on splitting the trip down the middle. That's basically what we're planning to do--I've just never used points for a platonic friend before.

And, FWIW, I really don't feel like I'm a cheesy person for wanting a fair split of resources. I'm certainly not trying to take advantage of my friend, I just wanted to figure out how others have handled this type of situation.

In a point situation, if you are staying at one property, it gets a bit more difficult but one way would be say on a six night stay, book with points the first three and let him/her book revenue 3-6. If you can't get points availability on your nights then too bad for you, pay cash. Its not the other persons job or duty to worry about that. I wouldn't put it on the other person anyway

Car rental, either pay for it and have the other pay fuel and some admission type charges or pay for drinks

you could just split the costs too at the end.

whatever you do, agree to it before you book anything or are committed to paying for anything. Also, if one has to bail, have a plan for that too

the status plays no role in this, this is just a bonus you can throw into the trip since it does not cost you a dime.

the opportunity cost, you are choosing to use these points, don't blame the friend for using them.. YOU are choosing to use them.. there should not be one pence charged to the friend for opportunity cost. matter of fact I find that bringing that up gives me the extremely cheesy feeling about you.
