A few years ago, it was indeed impossible but now is at least YMMV.
As you can see, since a year or two ago, there has been a pull-down menu to select country of CC issuer on the CC payment screen on AA.com, it indicates AA.com accepts non-US issued credit cards.
According to AA official policy(I posted the link somewhere in this thread), AA.com accepts some selected foreign issued CCs for award booking from AA EXP/OW emerald but I guess AA PLT/GLD may be allowed to use foreign issued CCs.
I haven't use foreign issued CCs for revenue ticket but the CC payment screen looks same as award's one, I guess AA.com may accept foreign issued CC from elites as well.
Interestingly, "Paypal" option showed up on AA.com for buying revenue ticket as a non-status while the Paypal option didn't show up as AA EXP.
It can't be a fraud prevention issue, can it? I mean everybody has to show
ID to fly. It's very easy to arrest someone who bought a ticket using stolen
credit cards(foreign or US). Crooks with stolen credit cards usually go for
expensive items like jewelry, watches, electronics, computers, etc....
