Really depends on your boss and the feel of the office. For example, I just took my first job out of grad school in NYC and my bosses encourage me to use PTO to to go back to NOLA quite regularly and allow me to make up hours when I come in midday Monday after a long weekend. It's a boutique architecture firm, and everyone knows architects are crazy, so maybe that has something to do with it. I agree with everyone who recommends just telling your boss you have a prior commitment in Nov. but are willing to modify things if necessary. I had two weddings to attend within the first 60 days of being hired and approached it the same way.
