If you want real benefits at a property the best way to go is to be loyal guest of that property or the organization it is affiliated with if that organization has a strong identity (like Relais & Châteaux).
Hoteliers are increasingly fed up by agencies who must employ people specifically to harass them by stating that all their customers are VIP. The VIP inflation of "Virtuoso" customers will lead to the point where such (NON) VIPS's are not taken seriously anymore. I recently noticed that this is already the case and had a really big laugh at a French property last week.
