Southwest since 3/01/11. Tier-qualifying points (with a couple minor exceptions) are based on spend and fare class.
That's 3 of the 4 biggest airlines having a spend component starting in January, up from zero several years ago. Not a happy trend
Thanks; I wasn't aware that Southwest had different FF tiers.
And add Virgin America to that list.
So there are several examples in the airline industry.
