Just wanted to add that I am fond of using
Great Circle Mapper to plan. It shows flight miles and segments, and the visual map is handy for visualizing if I'm properly going from continent to continent. I also use
ExpertFlyer to plan specific flights, since I can see the airlines, the equipment, the flight duration, seat maps, etc.

Are you referring to the huge increase ex-Middle East last year, or something else/more recent?
