Of note - the web site for the conference does state that one can get a discount of 10-20% (depending upon the fare) if one flies on Star Alliance airlines. I do not know if this is a web based promotion only, or I can get the same promotion by calling the AC phone reservation agent, or by calling my travel agent.
Last question I can help with - just give your travel agent these codes for the conference booking...AC agent should also be able to book for you with Amadeus code.

Do you really book Flex tickets that only have R space? We can book tickets a year in advance (eg. YYC-SYD) and AC will have R=0 with 2 seats assigned in J. Maybe eyeball the assigned seats in J as a better way to approximate which TATL flight your wife would have a better chance upgrading on (and some days better than others for upgrading TATL flights).
