The domestic leg (MSY-LAX or MSY-IAH) is no issue, only interested in the better TPAC. I'll be staying overnight in either IAH or LAX so no worries about connection time.
I hear the 787 is quite cramped in Y, does that include E+?
Any worries about the 787 reliability?
I could also consider the NH 777 from LAX but I am worried about possible pitfalls of flying on a partner (mileage credit? luggage limit?)
Thanks!
You will enjoy a slightly wider seat on the sCO 777 from IAH if traveling in economy. The 787 may leave you a little less jet-lagged due to higher humidity and oxygen level in the cabin. However. The LAX flight is probably less likely to be completely full, which would leave you an adjacent seat open, but you can't count on that. If it were me and the price was the same I would do IAH.
If in BF you would also enjoy a wider seat on the sCO 777, and the difference would be even greater than in coach.
You can do the trip from/to MSY the same day if you want. You will start in MSY early on the outbound but it is possible. On the way home IAH is definitely doable the same day. LAX requires connecting in IAH to get back to MSY the same day. I just flew NRT-LAX-IAH-MSY recently and it was definitely too much time in the airports!
