I now use those little Tide "pods" when I'm going to be doing laundry in a hotel laundry room. I'm careful to pack them in a ziplock and make sure they won't get smashed in my tote.
Many military bases have FREE laundries in their accommodations, the Kirtland Inn at the AFB in Albuquerque certainly does. If you need quarters for a hotel laundry just ask at the front desk.
I've scouted around 4-5 star hotels in Asia and frequently found the hotel's laundry around the back, where you can drop off your duds at 1/5 to 1/3 the cost of sending it through the hotel itself - already mentioned above.
