I haven't been, but as I understand the Maldives, most of the hotels are not on the island where MLE is located, requiring either a boat or a seaplane ride to reach the resort. With this arrival time, I suspect a same day connection to one's resort will be all but impossible, forcing an overnight on MLE.
There are plenty of boats to other islands to late hours. Like Hong Kong to Macau there are so many people transiting demands brings supplies.
