Actually, Crawley constituency itself is marginal (see: http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/c...cy/851/crawley). It was held by Labour by just 37 votes in 2005 and then won by the Conservatives in 2010. Although Conservative-leaning wards are closer to the airport, there's a political calculation as to the likely effect on the whole town and wider area.
