For connections to USA, when the corridor from international arrivals to US CBP is open, you
DO NOT need to go thru Canadian immigration and customs and you do not need to pick up your bags.
Follow the US connections signs, and proceed thru the US security checkpoint. Afterwards, you will speak to US CBP, where they will pull up a picture of your bags. If they wish to search your bags, they will have them brought up into their secondary inspection area.
