Ann Arbor Trip Report

Just came back from Ann Arbor, having stayed at the Sheraton 4 times for three nights each. Three of the four times I was booked on the club level. (I used a birth year rate, which actually applies to a club level room that can be had for just $20 more than the standard rate.)

The lobby has a nice feel with the standard Link section in the middle, a bar off to the right, and check-in on your left. Check-in was swift and easy for each stay. The elevators are further to your left, past the well-equipped and clean fitness center. You also pass the outdoor pool, which I did not use but looked nice.

After the first time that you use the lobby, you'll probably not use it again, since the lobby section is not part of the main building. The actual floors of the hotel are in the back and it's quicker to park in the rear of the hotel and enter either on the left or right side of the back of the hotel, depending upon your room placement.

The room itself has a refrigerator (which I need) and a standard Sheraton layout. The room was in decent shape There are outlets on the bed side of each nightstand as well as on the side of the TV stand, for easy use for the work area. I stayed at two other Sheratons on my trip that were missing outlets in at least one of these two spots and I noticed the inconvenience.

I spent a lot of time in the rooms studying for some training that I did. The air conditioner was quiet and effective during the heat wave that we had. The bathroom was laid out well in standard Sheraton fashion. No problem with any of the utilities and the room was quiet.

The club allows access to soft drinks, fruit (apples, oranges, and bananas), and Nature Valley Granola bars 24/7. The espresso machine makes decent espresso from Starbucks beans all day long as well. There is also breakfast from 6:30 to 9:30 which features oatmeal, yoghurt, and cold cereals. The evening (5:30 to 8:30) features cheese and crackers, vegetables and dip, some hot choice (like spring rolls, spankopita, wings, or spare ribs), and alcoholic drinks to buy.

The club doesn't have that many seats, but I mostly ate in my room. There is a small business center in the club with computer, printer, office supplies, etc. I used this several times to print out assignments and everything worked fine. The stapler was convenient.

Two things bugged me. One thing was the Green Choice option. I took it for each of the four stays. I did not get points posted after the first three stays. I asked about the points at each stay ansd was assured multiple times that it was being taken care of. After my fourth stay, I got Green Choice points for the fourth stay only. After I finish writing this, I need to call Starwood and get this resolved. This promo has been way too much aggravation to be worth it for them or me.

One my third stay, I booked the suite since this was the only way I could be assured of access to the club level. (There is just one suite.) When I got there, I found out that I was not getting the suite but a standard room off the club floor. Only when I went to my car and got the original reservation did they acknowledge that they had taken the suite away from me "since it was under construction". I was given club access and 1,000 points (only after I complained) for my trouble (at the standard rate, of course).

At the club that evening, I met the wonderful family who was spending the next several weeks in the suite. Their children were quite sweet. Of course, there was a bit of a sour taste to in my mouth for being directly lied to. It's just unseemly.

Overall, I liked the Sheraton Ann Arbor. It was convenient to Ann Arbor itself. The club was nice. The rooms were in good shape and were good places to work. The lying part... I just know not to trust them when it matters. Now, off to get my Green Choice points.
