Has anyone had wifi to/from HKG or mainland China?

I was heading back to the States a few weeks ago and thanks to FT and the Flyerguide Wiki, saw a day in advance that my tail number was equipped with wifi...I avoided finishing some work as I was excited to try it out...

Got on board, after the door was closed, the purser announced "Although this plane is equipped with wifi, it will not be available on today's flight". Since I was in F, I asked that same purser about it, and she said, "I've never had it work on a flight to or from China or Hong Kong".

Looking at the coverage map, most of mainland China is indeed blocked out, but once you're out of Chinese airspace, there's a lot of flight time where wifi could be used.

I wrote United to get a definitive answer. My question wasn't answered, but I did get 15,000 miles. The miles were a nice gesture, but I really just wanted the question answered.

Unless someone says otherwise here, be prepared for wifi to not work on flights to/from HKG, PVG and PEK!
