In regards to the OP, AC might provide compensation as you are in such a case.
There was a comment made about being "in transit", but I find it somewhat hard to believe that there were only 10 passengers flying YUL-SFO, late in the day, who didn't originate in YUL.
My theory is that as long as I'm willing to sleep on an airport bench, I'll keep booking trips the way I do (at least until I build up enough US credit to get a card with trip delay insurance). But I would never count on an airline to provide me a place to sleep due to weather delays.
