I thought I heard the lounge dragon at YUL yesterday mention that hotel room/food vouchers are provided when a passenger is stranded in the middle of a trip (such as at a connecting point). That might explain why you got a hotel last time you were stuck at YUL.

In regards to the OP, AC might provide compensation as you are in such a case.
