However I was always under the impression they work in shifts. So a few days at work, maybe standby days as well. Then the same time off. I always thought it was like the services, police and hospital workers.

We actually have a lot of commuters on Mixed Fleet, especially from Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle and Scotland. I think our furthest commuters are from Germany and Spain. Confirmed travel, including Hotlines, attract Avios Points and tier points and duty free purchases attract 2 Avios points for every pound spent onboard.
I suppose it's not necessarily that crew want to spend time on planes when they're not working but not everyone wants to live near to Heathrow. I didn't actually go anywhere on my leave but just bronzed myself in the garden as I didn't fancy going near an airport this time.
