Furthermore, I do not see how your post relates to AA adding a non stop flight from LAX to GRU, which is the topic of this thread.

I also disagree. I live in Rio and didn't feel threatened by the demonstrations even when they were going on. Of course, street crime in São Paulo (or many other major cities) is another matter. Street crime in Rio has gone dramatically down since the police took over the slums from the local drug gangs. The poster who wrote "...the previous administration, who was defeated due to corruption" is mistaken. President Lula's term finished normally and he was barred by the constitution from seeking a third term, just as in the US. He would have won overwhelmingly. As for GRU, it was shut down for a few hours due to demonstrations on the road from São Paulo, but no other airport in Brazil, including GIG and SDU, was shut.
