Power surges or other electrical issues could have damaged the battery during times that the plane was powered up. That seems a more likely possibility to me than "massive coincidence".
I guess anything is possible and it does seem that there is an uncertainty from the invesigators.
Re power surges, not convinced. They are pretty much stand alone and activated by sea water. Only wiring is to monitor the unit from the flight deck??
