Immigration & control at JFK (Customs Declaration Form)

Hello, I hope this is the right forum. I have a flight from Milan to San Francisco with a layover of 3 hours in New York.
I'm going to stay at a friend's house, and wanted to bring them some prepackages italian cookies that they love (those http://www.google.it/imgres?imgurl=&..._M8UWbTVJsM%3A), and a little papyrus printing from egypt (I bought it 4 years ago, doesn't cost much, like 15 dollars)
Now, my question is... how does this work through immigration? should I declare the food or not? just bring it with me in my carry-on or put them in the luggage?
I read some forums but they're not really clear, and having only 3 hours of layover I want to be sure that I won't have any problems.
Thank you!
