Apparently it's "not allowed". Emirates say it is not allowed according to their terms and conditions but I can't find it:

There is also no process to get your bags off the plane. It's always through checked.

Had a pretty bad experience going to a business meeting, was assured all of the above is possible and then spent money to fix Emirates' errors.

Confused. UK citizen so no visa issues. Going back to BA to be honest.
