Polar Route!! CX829 YYZ->HKG in J

I normally don't do trip reports, but since this trip has left such a great taste in my mouth even though it has nearly been a month, I decided to write it anyway not only to savoir the memories of those pleasant hours up at 35000ft, but as a quick sharing of experience since there hasn't been much trip reports of this flight here on FT.

Ticket was round trip and originally purchased in "K" fare, Economy. I later upsold the return leg of the trip in PEY "R" in hopes of getting an upgrade.

I was put on waitlist 3 months out for June 23rd. Expertflyer showed only 3 seats occupied in the entire cabin and I'm ALREADY put on waitlist?? Oh well... I was kinda desperate for this upgrade to go through, as I've had a successful upgrade on the same flight last X'mas, and it took my virginity of air travel. After playing rounds of stone paper scissors on the award search function on CX's website for the next 2 months awards started to show up for the week I'm flying, sadly though, they were all for CX825 (day flight) instead of my much preferred the redeye CX829. But still, I'd rather sit in J on a day flight than to be stuck in PEY on the redeye, so I grabbed it anyway. Then, few days later, Murphy's Law Reverse Mode took place and CX829 showed up in the awards inventory, albeit being June 19. Despite meaning that I'll need to leave Toronto a few days early, I called Asia Miles to snap up the redemption in a heartbeat. And then it was all confirmations and confirmations, and out came my biz class ticket!

This is what my Manage My Booking looked like after I made my reservation to take that award for CX829:

Now that is something you don't see everyday, FIVE records for a SINGLE trip to Hong Kong LOL! The original ticketed class (June 23) was there, then my very first request for an upgrade which was waitlisted on the same date. Then I spotted the award for CX825, so I changed my underlying PEY ticket to June 19 in order to claim the upgrade. And finally CX829 showed up so Cathay holded the award for me as they helped me changed my underlying ticket for a second time (from CX825 to 829). I find this a nice gesture as I thought that you need your underlying ticket to ALREADY be on the same flight before they could do the upgrade for you.

Another pic of MMB after my underlying ticket got changed to 829:

Then after my J ticket was issued MMB started to clean up itself and 5 records narrowed down to 1 : CX829 June 19 Business (U) - Confirmed

More to come....
