Plans Are Dropped for Speedier Bus Trip to La Guardia Airport
Select Bus Service Route Drew Complaints About Parking
Transportation officials have scrapped a proposal to bring streamlined bus service to 125th Street in Manhattan, foiling plans to ease traffic along the clogged Harlem thoroughfare and improve travel times to La Guardia Airport.
In letters sent to elected officials on Tuesday, the city Department of Transportation and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced they were dropping the Select Bus Service route, citing business owner and resident concerns.
Community leaders said the route—which would have installed dedicated bus lanes along parts of 125th Street—would reduce parking spots and contribute to congestion even more.
In response, DOT officials scaled back the designs, but some in the community continued to complain...."
Why does 125th street have non-commercial, on-street parking at all? What other east/west thoroughfare in Manhattan has weekday, on-street parking between the main avenues?
