When the flight plan is prepared the possible diversion airports are listed by ops. When a situation arises the flight deck already has suggested diversion options and goes there. A346 towbars are indeed unique and its one of the longest aircraft out there. Strange that the PIC didn't park aircraft on the apron in a way that did not require push back to begin with.

That said this one of the cases where the experienced traveller says 'sh!t happens' and moves on. I doubt any crew intentionally delays an aircraft.
