But, the decision to land at BUD as opposed to XXX was safety-based. In terms of total flying miles here, the distances between scheduled vs. diversion destination are miniscule. This suggests that every effort was made to make the destination, but that could not be safely done. This could have been as simple as a wind shift affecting the direction of the final approach.
All of this simply shows that there are many variables in aviation. Even with sophisticated software modeling, experienced cockpit crews with ground support, there is no way that modern aviation can be as predictive as some believe. The key, however, is that safety is never compromised. And, it wasn't here.
