Platinum isn't all that big a step up from Gold. I presume you've checked the tables so you know the additional perks. Perhaps the biggest one is one that's not spelled out - by getting to Platinum this year, you'll have Platinum for 2014 (the benefits would actually extend right up to March 31, 2015), and if you take at least one mileage-earning flight in each calendar year, you would get a soft landing to Gold for the year 2015, and a soft landing to Silver for the year 2016. That means you would have Skyteam Elite Plus status right up to March 31, 2016, and Skyteam Elite status right up to March 31, 2017, just on the back of taking at least one mileage earning flight in each calendar year after having qualified for Platinum.

If you're not going to be travelling much on Skyteam, though, it's probably not worth the hassle. Getting 13k miles by flying is not particularly easy/cheap. Particularly, as you imply, you would have to book this travel specifically in order to reach Platinum, rather than merely using future planned/necessary travel as a stepping stone.

My advice - don't bother, it's not worth the significant financial outlay.

(But do bear in mind that, should travel become necessary by the end of the year, that you have up to and including December 31, 2013, to achieve your Platinum target).
