Thanks other FTers for the knowledgeable information. I guess I have to let go. Although I wasn't very happy to get stranded 6hrs+ at BUD, I guess the captain at least had done his best to ensure our safety.
It is indeed not that nice to see that some of the posters were slight over enthusiastic when replying.
But to add, in my experience, yes, based on the situation the chances are small that you get any money compensation. However, if I were you, I will still write in to customer service and see what they can give you seeing that you are a *G/UA 1K and 6+ hours is not a short delay seeing that it was mainly due to lack of ground equipment - technical?.
My interpretation here is that weather is the indirect factor (you did not get stranded in HKG due to weather but diverted due to that).
After all my experience with LH, they tend to be not that customer friendly in such instances. You can also try and write to United about this (since both are quite close partners).
