Philadelphia would be a good choice. DC is about four hours away, though traffic can be terrible and it's probably better to take the train (or even a bus) rather than drive. I've never been to Providence but it seems like the type of place that would make for a good weekend getaway.
Thanks, we gave some thought to Philly but it just wasn't appealing to us for some reason. DC is weird, you either like it or you don't...and we don't.
Could be b/c I went to school pretty close to there eons ago.
