I had numerous occasions on which passengers asked me this whilst I was in customer service. Imagine how awkward it was to tell them that they signed a contract but we cannot force them to travel. In some cases people would try and remove their return ticket, costing GBP30 service fee, with taxes returned. Like many of the posters say here, it is not recommended that you make a habit of it.
