Amazing comment! Does US television really claim that the whole of Greece is on strike or rioting continuously, or has dieuwer2 seen a clip of protests in Athens and assumed that things are the same across an entire country?

I visited two Greek islands in May this year. Zero strikes, zero riots, prices much on a level with the rest of Europe and if anything a little lower than 2012. The OP is visiting Crete, not Athens.
In the islands most people depend on tourism for their livelihood and have only a few precious months to make enough money to last them till the next summer. They understand this very well and can't manage it if they are on strike or on the streets.
