But hey, as CBP said to me very recently, "[I'm] not a real American."

Forget American, sometimes the CBP professes to understand other cultures too. My friend who is South Asian was asked why he had a Mexican surname (Rodrigues). I had no idea that Mexico had exclusive use of that last name seeing that the Portuguese and Spanish went all over the world and people for several countries have that last name.
And if some of the posters here think the CBP treats Americans poorly, try it with any other citizenship, it is several degrees worse. Again I stress that a majority of CBP officers are professional (not always friendly but at least professional) but there seems to be a minority that is running amok.
