1. Exact Reason for Delay
Airlines are not required to be specific but you can get ground agents to give you a "letter for the insurers" for any delay. I got one for both 1 July delays (HX and QF) - I was told to do so by Amex the first time round "ask the HX ground agents. They're very experienced in writing them...". They have to state WX or Tech in the letter, but they do not have to be any more specific.
2. HX Staff Lying - no comment. Maybe it's ignorant bliss.
3. Compensation
You are told to have travel insurance for that, but Amex/ACE's treatment of my 1 July claim (this year)
belittles the value of travel insurance for delay (well, at least the one that comes with Amex Plat Charge...)
4. Travel arrangement
Again, a travel insurance item (may be arguable for the missed connection defintion Amex gave me, above).
