I am American and not at all certain of the things to be aware of when renting a car in Greece as opposed to the US. I do know how to drive a manual so that isn't an issue but are there other gotchas or things to be aware of ?

Usually I politely decline the rental agency when asked what type of coverage I prefer but I am thinking it might not be advisable to do so in Europe. And in fact some of the smaller local agencies advertise that full coverage is included. Is there any advice on choosing/not choosing the coverage and what kind to choose ?

Also would anyone be able to provide specific recommendations for car rental agencies at Heraklion airport.

Lastly is there any specific advice about driving around the island that would be useful to know ?
