That's my point. It really is silly since what I am trying to update is work address and my phone numbers. I get on updating ID's (since that is something they would want to verify), but when I walk into the airport and tell them "my new work address is X, my new phone number is X" the fact they have my fingerprint and can visually confirm it is me making the change is meaningless.
That said, I'm flying domestic tomorrow, so I'll get to the airport early and walk over to talk to our good friends at CBP about updating my record...

Not entirely crazy if one imagines a robust identity theft effort - change to a phone number and work address of the identity thief so you no longer receive updates.
That said, I agree it is annoying and cumbersome.
