Any number of reasons.... they might be holding pending jet traffic, they might be police choppers on operations, might be aerial filming etc etc. Or maybe the Americans have found your hide and are about to "pay you a visit" ..
The fact that helicopters can hover is of great use to both their operators and ATC.
Fact of the matter is that Heathrow is a major international airport, so if "something happening today" then I can assure you it would be plastered all over the media before you even had a chance to login to FlyerTalk and post.
