Unless you have a reason for wanting IAD, you might search on WAS and get all the Washington, DC airports. Won't hurt. Might help.

Thank you, Romelle. No, I would not elect the loop for miles, but I did not mind flying via DTW as I know their lounge is far much better than any other cities in consideration. I also like to choose Detroit because I realize that particular city needs my money paid on landing fees more than others.

I like to land in DCA much more than in IAD, as DCA is right in the city and it's very easy and fast to get to my friends from there.

To Rylan: YES, the 'perceived demand' is exactly what I had in mind when posting this question. I often search for flights 6 months or more in advance and did not think that the cheap booking class would sell in a day just because many other people happen to love the same itinerary as I wanted - and acted on it before I did. Possible, though.
