We were told there would be a delay while they retrieved his bags from the hold. 5 minutes after that GA appeared again and removed somebody from Y, at which point the original 2A came back on board. Whether 2A was upgraded or wait listed into an empty seat it seems true that until push back there are no guaranteed upgrades IMHO.
In this case, it looks like an opup though. Y was full. Or possibly this was the last gate upgrade.
They did the right thing to give the SE his confirmed upgrade.
Once happened to us on a transatlantic leg. We arrive at the last minute at the gate. Our confirmed upgrades had been given away and we ended up in Y. They gave us three seats together to try to appease us. Next on board, we were asked to move and leave the three seats to a couple with an infant. Pissed off as I was I refused.
Mind you this was a station with contract people. Not AC personnel.
But how do you know the SE had a confirmed upgrade?
And how do you know the original passenger had an op-up or a gate upgrade, and not a confirmed upgrade?
I mean, clearly that passenger didn't make a fuss, so either he thought it was reasonable, or he was not as vocal as a lot of us would be.
As an E35K, I'd probably accept that if it was a gate upgrade. I would express my displeasure, but I would accept it. Any other situation, and I'd seriously consider just refusing to vacate the seat, unless there is a promise of reasonable compensation.
