I recently asked AAdvantage rep if there was some way to design your award routes since it looked like I would need AAnytime miles and I figured maybe there was some way to do it if you were paying the extra miles. To my surprise she told me yes. She said check multi city and put in your route, as long as you were not on the ground more than 4 hours you would not be charged for each segment individually. It didn't work for me because she said AAnytime miles will not offer partner airlines and for us to fly SEA-LAX-MIA the SEA-LAX leg is only served by Alaska Airlines nonstop. However she was insistant that if using Saver miles and the Alaska leg was available, we would not be charged separately for each leg.
I played around on other dates and each time it did charge for both legs. Can anyone shed some light on how this might work?

IME using multi the web DOES charge for each segment. Simply hold it, call and have the agent "reprice" it ans re-store for your ticketing. (To be honest, the reprice always knocked it back down to a single charge - if applicable - but I always had the agent ticket it. Web services said that once an agent does anything to the res, it can lock it from the web for tkt. YMMV)
