I respectfully believe saying OP was given a sandwich is a complete mischaracterization of the events. He was offered one. If US offered you 10000 miles from a complaint, and you refused, would you say you we're given 10000 miles? I highly doubt it.

Yes, I would certainly say that I was given 10000 miles, even if I rejected what I was given.
Check M-W some more; there are additional definitions of "give" that do not involve acceptance by a proposed recipient. Further, plenty of legal documents that I see provide for notice being "given", which expressly does not mean that the notice is actually "received".
