Hm, from my credit card statement from my most recent cancellation [specific data re ticketing edited by Moderator for member privacy] (I cancelled a segment on the 4th) was charged $200, normal chg fee. Ideas?

Flying non-UA is an option, but all my flights to LA actually add up to around 25K+ PQM per year, which is enough to earn me extra GPUs after 1K, which I think is still worth the loss in fees at this point.

As for buying tickets closer to the date: I generally actually don't know about changes in schedules until less than a week in advance. In my case this wouldn't help much. :-\
