I my myopic view you certainly have as there near-certainly was no need to mess with the ticket. So the correct action would have been to check if the airline can live with the typo.
But you might not have the same chain of experiences as I do. UA destroyed two of my awards for much lesser reasons than a name change. So I'd never even consider to do such a thing.
Name changes are very invasive operations which usually require cancellation and rebooking. So if you do not get the best agent out there, you invite all demons of hell.
