This won't help you for 1K, but will for just getting up to Platinum. If you spend $35k on the card for 5k PQM anyway, then your PQD requirement is waived except for 1K anyway.

If you're only traveling on cheap international fares, then the GPUs you lose dropping down aren't that bad a loss, and you only get 75% instead of 100% bonus miles. Other than that (and loss of $60 statement credit) it's not that big a loss.

On the other hand, if you're always definitely over the 75k PQM mark, those extra PQMs don't help you much. Still, it's not too hard to manufacture the $25k spend required for PQD waiver for Platinum.
