If at all possible, try to change to an all Air Canada itinerary connecting at YYZ. United and AC are in a joint venture for all transatlantic flights, so you may be able to do this as a flight change. For a fee, of course, but may be possible. Especially if you happened to book through AC.
When I lived in the States, I usually deliberately chose AC to Europe. Whenever possible, on all AC metal from the US to the AC gateway. However bad Canadians might think AC is, it is leaps better than today's UA, and than pre-merger UA or CO. Plus the YYZ International Maple Leaf Lounge is a heck of a lot nicer than the EWR United Clubs (ex-President's Club).
Is UA the bad apple? Or is EWR the bad apple?
