Hi flyingscotsman. My wife is from Russia. It is a very sad state of affairs, not sure how they will manage with Winter Olympics etc coming up.
As far as hotel goes, should not be an issue. On the ground I would reccomend to be discreet, no public signs of affection etc, I am not sure how the new laws will work in reality, but even before this the many times I have been and my wife has friends who are gay and they do not openly show any affection etc. This said apart from all the politics it is a great country and great place to visit and you will enjoy it!
