I agree about buying higher class tickets, but in these cases I found tickets that were not at that much of a premium. That is my typical strategy as we are very flexible for summer vacation. It is surprising what one day difference is - I wish I could see their pricing algorithms...

Agree with OP's point that more availability should be released, especially when BE isn't going to sell out and will be filled with opups (ie: summer). (I certainly wouldn't buy up to M without a confirmed upgrade available.)
That said, discount J fares are often cheaper than M+SWU in the summer.
